This page is a history of some of the Jewish persecutions.  It is not Christian bashing but an acknowledgement of some of the harm that has been done over the years. 

BCE
– 14th century persecution under pharaoh.
– 12th century Israel is a small nation surrounded by powerful and aggressive neighbors.
– 922 Israel is divided into two kingdoms: north, Israel and south, Judah
– 722 Shalmaneser V destroyed the kingdom of the north. Assyrian captivity under Sennacherib                began
– 587 Nebuchadnezzar conquers Jerusalem and exiles Jews to Babylon.
– 537 King Cyrus of Persian conquers Jerusalem and allows the Jews return
– 460 Story of Esther
– 332 Alexander the Great conquered Jerusalem; Greek rule established.
– 169 King Antiochus
– 167-141 Maccabean war of liberation.
– 63 Under Roman rule General Pompey conquered Jerusalem and reduced Judea to a puppet state.

 

After the death of Jesus Christ
– 66-70 First Jewish Revolt against Rome.  The Christians saw this as a time for Messiah’s return so did not aid their Jewish brethren. 70: Destruction of the temple.
– 115 Ignatius of Antioch instructed the Magnesians to no longer live for the Sabbath but for the L-rd’s day.  Sabbath is no longer recognized.  This was done purely to gain favor with Rome and to allow for claiming favored status as the new chosen people of G-d.
– 132-135 Second Jewish revolt against Rome.  Believed Bar Kokhba as the Messiah.  This caused further split between Jews and Jewish Christians.
– 135 Emperor Hadrian destroyed Jerusalem and rebuilt a new Roman city, Aelia Capitolina. Christian leadership moved to Antioch, Alexandria, and Rome.  The theory that the Church replaced the Jews as G-d’s chosen people developed.
– 165 Justin Martyr said, in speaking to a Jew,  “The scriptures are not yours but ours.”
– 177 Bishop of Lyon, Irenaeus, “Jews are disinherited from the grace of G-d.”
– 185 Origen of Alexandria promoted allegorical interpretation of scripture and de-emphasized Israel’s covenant.
– 230 The false teaching of Deicide was introduced by Hippolytus of Rome.  “G-d killers” and “C– 313 Edict of Milan Permitted Religious tolerance for Christians by intolerance for Jews.
– 325 Council of Nicea; Changed the calendar effectively disconnecting Easter from Passover and establishing Sunday as the official day of worship.
– 330 Constantine and Queen Helena, his mother, started to build churches over holy sites.
– St. John Chrysostom “Jews are inveterate murders, possessed by the devil.”
– 546 Jews were forbidden to celebrate Passover if it fell  before the Christian Easter; guards were posted at synagogues to prevent the saying of the Shema
– 590 Pope Gregory forbid Christians from eating with Jews or observing Sabbath.
– 692 Intermarriage between Christians and Jews was punishable by death.
– 897 Jews stripped of property rights by the church.
– 10th Century custom began of hitting a Jew in the face on Good Friday and stoning Jewish homes on Palm Sunday.
– 1096-1300 The Crusades…
– 1099 Christians burned Jews alive in the synagogue in Jerusalem upon its capture.
– 1146 False claim that Jews killed Christian children to use their blood to make matzah resulted in the death of the entire Bloise France population being burned at the stake. (The false claim is still heard in parts of the world today)hrist killers” became the charge.
– 1215 Jews forced by the church, Pope Innocent III, to wear distinctive dress such as the yellow star of David. Jews were forced to live in restricted areas.
– 1290 England under King Edward I expelled Jews from England until 1656.
– 1306 Expulsion from France.
– 1320 Bubonic Plague blamed on the Jews.  The reasoning was that they didn’t get the plague so they must cause it.

– 1347 Black Death, Jews were blamed again.
– 1349 Expulsion from Hungary
– 1387 Chaucer wrote the Prioress’s Tale, a story based upon a blood libel report.
– 1421 Expulsion from Austria
– 1445 Expulsion from Lithuania
– 1481 The Inquisition under King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.  The Inquisition was set up as a permanent court of the Church.
– 1492 100,000 Jews were forced to leave Spain. (Christopher Columbus)
– 1516 The Jews of Venice were forced to live on a foundry Island named “Ghetto.” The Ghettos were locked at night and Jews  wore distinctive badges when they ventured outside of the Ghetto.
– 1500-1543 Martin Luther, while first supportive of the Jews, when they did not convert to Christianity quickly wrote “Of the Jews and Their Lies” (main points)
– Synagogues burned and homes destroyed.
– Jews deprived of prayer books and Talmuds
– Rabbis forbidden to teach
– Passports and traveling privileges revoked.
– Jews force to do manual labor
– “Act so we may be free of this insufferable devilish burden.”
– 1530 Ivan the Terrible of Russia ordered Jews who refused to convert to Christianity to be drowned.
– 1590 Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice popularizes the stereotype of the “greedy, heartless, money-grubbing Jew.”
– 1648-56 Bogdan Chmielnicki led a revolt against the Polish gentry then joined the peasants in attacking the Jews.  Over 100,000 Killed in the Balklands.
– 1743 Jews were forced into money lending when this occupation was forbidden for Christians by the Church. The fact that a few succeeded gave rise to the myth all Jews are incredibly wealthy.
– 1827 Nicholas I of Russia introduced a 25 year military service requirement for Jews.  Children were recruited at age 12, forced to eat pork, and forcibly converted.
– 1850 Detroit paper referred to Jews as mysterious, cursed wanderers.
– 1862 Civil war. General Grant general order #11 expelled all Jews from his military district of Tennessee.  Jews were refused admission to schools, universities, and professional organizations.  Jewish Hospitals were built because Jewish doctors were not allowed on staff at other hospitals.
– 1881-1920 Three waves of violence against the Jews.  The Russian Pogroms.  Over half of the worlds Jews lived in Russia at this time.
– 1881 Houston Stewart Chamberlain, wrote The Foundations of the 19th Century, which claims Jews have tainted the Aryan races with Semitic Blood.
• 1903 A Russian newspaper published the Learned Elders of Zion, which claimed a Jewish plot to dominate the world.  This was a forgery.  Henry Ford believed the story and widely published it throughout the United States.
• 1917 After WW I the British Government was given a mandate to rule the territory Palestine, and the Balfour Declaration supported a national home for the Jewish people in their ancient homeland.
• 1921 The British made contradictory promises to Jews and Arabs and took over half of Palestine and gave it to the Arabs, creating the kingdom of Transjordan
• 1922 Hitler stated that if he won power the annihilation of the Jews would be his first and foremost task.
• 1924 President Coolidge signed the Immigration Act which effectively ended open immigration to the USA.

1929 Arabs demanded an end to Jewish immigration and massacred Jews in Hebron and Safed.
• 1933 The first concentration camp was established at Dachau.
• 1936 Continued campaign of Arab violence to remove the infidel from their midst. Britain backed down on its promises to protect the Jews just as Adolph Hitler came to power.
• 1936 Olympic games in Munich.  Signs saying Jews are not welcome had to be removed from the most public areas to present a better view to the western world.
• 1938 Jewish Passports were required to be marked with a J.
• 1939    937 Jews set sail from Cuba to escape persecution. The ship was forced to return to Europe and most of these Jews died in death camps.
• 1939 All Jews forced to wear a yellow star.
• 1941 33,000 Jews rounded up at Babi Yar, forced to digs huge pits and then were shot.  Six major death camps were formed in Poland.
• 1945 The war came to an end with over 6 million Jews Dead.  1/3 of the world’s Jewry were murdered.
• 1947 the UN voted to partition the already partitioned Palestine. Remember, Transjordan already had more than ½.
• 1947 France led the way in Holocaust denial. Maurice Bardeche and Paul Rassinier when questioned of the Holocaust, defended the Germans.
• 1947 England sends immigrants fresh from the camps back to Hamburg.
• 1950s US college professors Austin App and Harry Barnes published material that questioned and later denied the Holocaust had really occurred.
• 1977 Arthur Butz, Professor at Northwestern University wrote the Hoax of the 20th Century in which he denied the Holocaust as ever occurring.
• 1984 Fred Leuchter, a self styled gas chamber expert, went to Auschwitz and claimed to prove large numbers of people could not have been gassed there.  His lies have since been discredited.
• 1990s Bradley Smith began a campus program called Committee for Open Debate on the Holocaust in which he tries to force debate on details of the holocaust to discredit the overwhelming evidence of this tragedy.
• 1990’s Many churches give support to creating a Palestinian nation with Yasser Arafat, even as he leads terror against Israel.
• 1990-2005 an increase in anti-Semitic hate crimes occurs across Europe and America. Desecrating Jewish burial sites and violence against Jewish increases with cases of death becoming more common.
• 2000-2005 Increased calls for Israel to not put up a defensive fence although many other nations have them.
• 2004 Jewish man is killed outside of his synagogue in France. Anti-Semitism in France causes a large number to immigrate to Israel.
• 2005 World Council of Churches calls for a boycott of Israel even as Israel creates the Christian Allies Caucus to improve Christian / Jewish relations.
• 2005 Canada requires those listing Jerusalem as their birthplace to not list nation as Israel.
• 2006 Anglican Church calls for Divestiture of Israel. Later the church reverses its position

2006 War against Hezbollah in Lebanon.  UN treats Hezbollah as they would a nation, giving terrorist groups the same rights as sovereign nations.

2006 Hezbollah does not follow the cease fire resolutions 1701 initiated by the UN while the UN gives money to the victims of Israel’s defensive war against Hezbollah.  No aid is given by the UN to the numerous Israeli communities in the North that were victims of thousands of rocket attacks from Hezbollah.
