Does Legalism nullify God’s grace? |
|
A friend left me a message the other day stating they had heard a preacher state that Legalism was the nullification of God’s grace and wanted to know my thoughts on the subject.
Of course this demands the definition of legalism. Legalism is the pursuit of one’s own salvation based upon righteousness obtained by ones own works. Too often people refer to any attempt to keep God’s commandments as legalism. That our congregation seeks to observe the commandments as well as we can has had many call us legalistic. Rather we seek to follow Yeshua’s understainding that he who loves me keeps My commandments. As Yeshua is God incarnate this would mean keeping all the commandments as best as one is able.
Secondly, God is all powerful. If an act of many was able to nullify anything of God, that would put man as more powerful than God. If this was true, God would not be God for God is all powerful. Nothing man does can nullify God’s grace. God has shown grace to mankind since the origins of his existence. This is part of the very nature of God shown throughout the bible.
To state Legalism nullifies God’s grace puts man over God and is as ridiculous as saying man can overrule God whenever mankind desires. |
